Heading into the fall and with Parliament resuming in mid-September, Transport Action has launched three new petitions to the House of Commons on passenger rail issues. Following the success of our petition campaign in the spring, after which the government’s response alluded to the possibility of a study of passenger priority, we hope that each of these petitions will gather enough signatures to require the government to address a specific issue.
The three petitions are:
e-5097: For a VIA Rail Canada Act, addressing the long-standing absence of proper enabling legislation for Canada’s passenger railway, by incorporating the contents of Private Members’ Bills C-371, the Rail Passenger Priority Act, and C-236/C-640 (41-2) the VIA Rail Canada Act, in a Government Bill.
e-5104: To keep HFR operations remain public sector asking that the government revise the HFR project to omit and reverse the handover of VIA Rail’s existing Corridor operations to a private, multinational corporation (as detailed on page 21 of the HFR RFEOI) and protect VIA Rail’s role in delivering public passenger rail operations and maintenance along the Windsor to Quebec City corridor and across Canada.
e-5107: To fund track repairs in New Brunswick on the Ocean’s currently far too leisurely route, and to consider allowing VIA to acquire that segment of the route from CN.
Please sign and share these petitions widely – any resident of Canada can sign.
