Chris Holloway died in Wakefield, QC on March 26, 2024. He is pictured above at the Transport Action office in Ottawa, Christmas 2008.
Chris was Transport 2000 Canada’s (now Transport Action) Editor and fundraiser in 1989 and Director in 1990. Harry Gow and David Jeanes knew him well. One of his early contributions to Transport 2000’s research was a paper on how the new 50-seat Bombardier Regional Jet would revolutionize air travel. His predictions came true. He was also a long standing member of the local Ottawa-area Transport Action group, mostly by email or online, which meets each Friday and was with us on a group trip by rail to Alexandria in 2022.
Harry Gow has contributed this memory: “In the late 1980s, Transport 2000 was gearing up to fight the Mulroney Government’s massive cuts to the VIA Rail network. The campaign would burn up many dollars, and we were looking for resources. I just happened to run into a former colleague in a visit to the Caisse Populaire in Hull, Québec; Camille, was now a staffer in Mr. Mulroney’s office on Parliament Hill. I mentioned that her boss had thrown us this massive challenge, and she replied that a fund-raiser had raised impressive amounts for the Conservative Party and was now available. I called Chris at the number Camille had given me, and once he was hired Chris ran the campaign to oppose the cuts and the same time brought in tens of thousands of dollars. Chris thus became known around Ottawa, and for many years he was a go-to person to analyse problems in public transport and write up sustainable solutions for Environment Canada and other federal bodies”.
David Jeanes added that “Chris worked with Charlene Lambert at the former City of Ottawa, to obtain funding for research papers by Transport 2000, including one that I wrote on Regional Rail for Ottawa, anticipating the O-Train.”
Chris Holloway was a seasoned management consultant with specialties in Organizational Design and Classification, and also a veteran radio broadcaster in South Central Ontario and Prince Edward Island. Chris held an Honors B.A. in Urban Sociology from the University of Guelph. For two years, he studied Civil and Constitutional Law at Laval University in Quebec City. Chris was an accomplished skier and he sailed on an Alden Sloop for most of his life. He was a Senior Fellow in the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and was a Member of the Gatineau River Yacht Club, based in Chelsea.
